Chapter Twelve

I need Seth far more than he needs me now that Caroline has passed. If I hadn’t spent the last decade keeping him away, maybe he wouldn’t be so bitter toward me. Every time I look at him, I see the hatred and resentment on his face. I pushed him too far. I kept him away too long. I wasn’t much of a father to him, not like he deserved.

It’s been three days. Three days since Caroline died. Since my heart left this earth to be with my angel. Seth hasn’t answered any of my calls and refuses to deal with it. The funeral is in two hours and I couldn’t even tell you if he will show up. I don’t blame him. Funerals aren’t my forte either, but it was his mother. He could put aside our differences for one day, for her sake.

Today we lay down the most caring, generous woman I’ve ever met. The woman who gave birth to two beautiful baby boys, my boys. She’s dead because I kept one from her. I separated our family and the heartache was too much for her to bear. I did this to us. I created the headache and the heartache here. I’ll never be able to admit that to Seth. To tell him what I did, confront my mistakes. He’ll hate me even more if I do. I’m promising myself that, if he shows today, I will do whatever it takes to mend our bond. He’s all I have left now. All I’ll ever have.
